Original Medicare pays for much but not all of the cost for Medicare-covered medical services and supplies. Medicare Supplement Insurance, sold by private companies in Florida can help pay for some or all of the out-of-pocket costs you experience.
*Medicare Supplement policies are standardized in most states including Florida and must follow both federal and state laws designed to protect the beneficiary. Policies are identified by letters A-D, F, G, and K-N. Each letter denotes a type of policy covering specified benefits. All companies providing a plan like Plan G will be providing the same benefits package.
*Starting January 01, 2020, Medigap plans sold to new beneficiaries new to Medicare January 01, 2020, and beyond will not be allowed to cover the Part B deductible, therefore plans C and F will not be available to these new beneficiaries. A suitable replacement will be Plan G.
If you already have either of these two plans (or the high deductible version of Plan F) or are covered by one of these plans before January 01, 2020, you will be able to keep your Plan F or C.
a) You must be enrolled in Parts A and B.
b) You pay a monthly premium to the insurance company for your chosen Medigap plan, in addition to your Part B premium.
c) It is important to compare policies as companies can charge different premiums for the same coverage. We can help with this, just call (888) 865-9086.
d) When first qualifying for Medicare, you can buy your Medigap policy during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period. This 6 month period begins the first month that you are covered under Part B, and you are age 65 or older. During this period, you cannot be denied a Medigap plan or charged more premium due to past or present health problems. You can change your Medigap plan any time thereafter in Florida, however the rate will reflect your current age, and you will likely have to qualify by successfully answering health questions or underwriting. These will vary by insurance company.
e) If you have Medicare Advantage and wish to buy a Medigap plan, once approved you will have to drop your Medicare Advantage plan as you cannot have both, ie only one will provide benefits.
f) If you join a Medicare Advantage plan for the first time and you are not satisfied with it, you have special rights under the Medicare program to buy a Medigap policy and a Medicare Prescription Drug plan if you return to Original Medicare within 12 months of joining the Advantage plan. This is a one time opportunity. It is known as the Medicare Advantage Trial.
For medical services by state law the Medigap plan can only cover Medicare-covered services. However, many Medigap insurers today offer additional services not covered by Medicare to include dental, vision, and hearing aid discounts. Some also offer 24/7 toll-free NurseLine assistance and fitness programs at no extra cost.
Yes you can. Only those becoming first eligible for Medicare at any age on or after January 01, 2020 will no longer be able to purchase an F or C plan in Florida.
No not automatically. In fact, a beneficiary can never be singled out for a rate increase in Florida. However, a rate change can be filed by a company each year with the state insurance office for an entire class of policyholders. This is typically done every 1-2 years and we see in general rate increases of 3-4% for policies in Florida.
We find there are three namely the F, G, and N plans. The F is by far the most common since it is the most comprehensive. The G will increase in popularity since it will now be the most comprehensive plan for new beneficiaries.
Plan N will be a popular option since for less coverage it can mean an approximate 30% savings over Plan F.
